‘Walking Dead’ creator’s ‘Invincible’ getting superhero movie adaptation
“The Waking Dead,” which is based on the comic book series of the same name, is the single biggest, dumbest phenomenon on TV right now. But did you know the comic’s co-creator, Robert Kirkman, has another series called “Invincible”?
“Invincible” is a comic book series revolving around the exploits of the eponymous superhero, whose powers of flight, super strength, super speed, and fast healing increase with use. Invincible, or Markus Sebastian Grayson as he is known to his high school friends, is the teenage son of a powerful superhero Omni-Man, who belongs to the alien Viltrumite race.
Now it looks like “Invincible” will be getting a big-screen adaptation for Universal Pictures.
“For nearly a decade I’ve had to endure the ‘what about Invincible?’ question as fans have watched The Walking Dead grow into the multimedia monstrosity it has become over the years,” Kirkman said in a statement. “The answer was always that we were waiting for the right team to partner with.”
And now that team has arrived, consisting of Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Kirkman himself.
Rogen and Goldberg will serve as writers, directors, and producers of the film. Kirkman is also producing through Skybound Entertainment, alongside colleagues Sean Furst, Bryan Furst, and David Alpert.
Kirkman expressed his confidence in Rogen and Goldberg, stating that the comic's shocking, edgy, and usually bloody stories are in “capable hands.” He believes the movie will be “another superhero movie, in a long line of superhero movies that continues to prove that it’s a viable, thrilling genre that will keep people coming to the cinema for years to come.”
Rogen and Goldberg assured fans they and their colleagues will do their absolute best to make the movie as great as possible. The two debuted as a directing duo in 2013 with “This is the End,” which they followed up with “The Interview” in 2014.
They also directed the first two episodes of the TV adaptation of the classic graphic novel series “Preacher,” and are set to direct the first episode of its second season.
Kirkman created “Invincible” with Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley. While the central character first made his appearance in 2002’s “Tech Jacket” #1, the first issue of the “Invincible” comic book was released in 2003 – making it one of Kirkman’s longest-running series that is second only to “The Walking Dead.” Kirkman recently revealed that “Invincible” will end this 2017 with issue 144.
“Invincible” belongs to the Image Comics shared universe, whose most recognizable heroes include Spawn, Witchblade, and Savage Dragon, and superhero teams such as the WildC.A.T.S. and Gen13.
Spawn creator Todd McFarlane has expressed great interest in developing a new “Spawn” film. Will “Spawn” and “Invincible” therefore kick-start a new shared cinematic superhero universe to rival that of Marvel and DC’s? We’ll probably find out soon enough! — BM, GMA News
