Free Comic Book Day celebrated in awesome fashion
In this day and age, reading and gathering information is done with the help of laptops, mobile devices, and other forms of technology that have access to the online gateway that is the Internet.
However, there are still people who are very passionate about holding a book and looking at artworks that are carefully drawn and printed on pages.
The comic book community gathers every first Saturday of the month of May to celebrate Free Comic Book Day, a promotional effort that started in the US to help independent comic stores.
Since then, the practice has come to the Philippines and its local comic book retailers and book shops, and it helps spread the joy of comic book reading as well as help independent artists market their works to customers.
On May 6, Free Comic Book Day was celebrated at several well-known comic book stores and book shops, all promoting popular publishers such as Marvel and DC Comics as well as other companies like Archie Comics, Bongo Comics, Valiant, and Dark Horse Comics.
Local comic book retailer and seller Filbar’s participated set up promotions at the SM Megamall, inviting popular Marvel Comics artists such as Leinil Yu and Steve Gan as special guests.
Gan is well known in the Filipino comic book industry for the iconic hero Panday, but he’s also famous for co-creating the character of Star-Lord—the Walkman-listening space outlaw who serves as the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy and who is famously played by actor Chris Pratt in the 2014 film and its sequel “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” which is now showing in theaters.

In the other side of the metro, Fully Booked and Comic Odyssey joined forces once again to host a mega- Free Comic Book Day celebration at their joint branch at Bonifacio High Street in Global City.
Inviting comics luminaries that included Pugad Baboy creator Pol Medina Jr., Arnold Arre, and Beerkada’s Lyndon Gregorio, the entire shop was filled from top to bottom with fans, customers, and even cosplayers who suited up as their favorite characters from both DC Comics and Marvel.

With titles like “Secret Empire,” “Wonder Woman,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” and “Betty and Veronica” given away, Free Comic Book Day celebrated its decade and a half run with style and success. You certainly had to be in one shop to experience what all the fun was about, and if you enjoy comic book and superhero movies today, this is where it all came from. — BM, GMA News
