‘Okja’ film trailer boasts giant super pig, big stars
The first trailer for the Netflix original film “Okja, has just dropped and it’s got a loveable giant pig front and center. It also shows off the big-name stars filling out its cast.
“Okja” is directed and co-written by South Korean director and screenwriter Bong Joon-ho.
Bong also directed and wrote the critically acclaimed monster film “The Host” and the equally lauded “Snowpiercer.”
The film revolves around a young girl named Mija (An Seo Hyun) and her beloved companion Okja. Okja is no ordinary friend, however — she is a gentle, giant creature who resembles a cross of a pig and a hippopotamus.
Mija has been taking care of her for 10 peaceful years in the South Korean mountains, so the bond they share is extremely strong. Their idyllic existence is shattered, however, when the powerful Mirando Corporation abducts Okja. The creature is then transported to New York, where the multinational conglomerate’s CEO Lucy Mirando (Tilda Swinton) is planning something big for her.
Wanting nothing more than to have her friend back, Mija embarks on a desperate rescue mission. Her efforts are complicated by the interference of different groups of demonstrators, consumers, and capitalists — all of whom have a vested interest in Okja’s fate.
From the looks of things, the movie will meditate on the deep bonds that form between humans and our animal companions, as well tackle animal welfare, the agriculture and food industries, and GMOs.
“Okja” welcomes newcomer An Seo Hyun. She is joined by Tilda Swinton, Steven Yeun, Paul Dano, Jake Gyllenhaal, Byun Heebong, Lilly Collins, and Giancarlo Esposito.
“Okja” is scheduled for its world premiere on May 19, 2017 at the Cannes Film Festival. It will be available on Netflix this June 28. — AT, GMA News
