Anti-Martial Law anthem 'Bayan Ko' rings out from UP Carillon

The anthem of the fight against the Marcos dictatorship was played at the University of the Philippines-Diliman campus on Thursday to mark the 45th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law in the country.

The melody rang out from the Carillion early morning during "Gunita sa Kampana", a kickoff event for the university's programs on the National Day of Protest.

Later in the afternoon, a bronze statue of the late former senator Jose Wright "Pepe" Diokno was unveiled on campus at the Commission of Human Rights.

Around the same time, students from the University of the Philippines marched to Rizal Park to join the mass protest against tyranny to join the call to stop extrajudicial killings.

The bells previously played the revolutionary tune on November 18, 2016, in protest of the burial of the late dictator at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

A popular rendition of "Bayan Ko" was created by Freddie Aguilar, now a vocal supporter of President Rodrigo Duterte. —Aya Tantiangco/JST, GMA News
