Jackie Chan trades slapstick humor for vengeful rage in ‘The Foreigner’

There’s a lot to say about Jackie Chan and his films that give him the legendary status he has rightfully deserved in movie history.

Throughout his career, the Hong Kong-born martial artist and actor has earned the moniker “Stunt Master” for his daring and death-defying action scenes (almost all of it he does himself) and literally has the injuries to show for them.

While known for his comedic antics and martial arts skills, Chan hasn't had the opportunity to display his more serious side in an English-language film — and now he has that chance with his latest movie “The Foreigner.”

Based on the 1992 best selling novel “The Chinaman” by Stephen Leather, Chan plays immigrant restaurant owner Ngoc Minh Quan. Quan losses his daughter to a bombing, leading him to wage his own crusade in finding the names of those responsible for his child’s death.

Chan is joined by Pierce Brosnan as Liam Hennessy, an Irish politician working for the British Government and has ties to the bombers, yet does not know who is responsible for the latest attack. This leads to a cat and mouse game that sees Quan intimidating Hennessy for the names of the bombers as a conspiracy is unraveled. One man’s desire for justice knows no bounds.

Set primarily in London and Belfast, "The Foreigner" has breathtaking locations and set pieces that are only enhanced by the dialogue and storytelling of the film. The movie should entertain Filipinos who enjoy their mix of drama and action.

More importantly, it offer viewers a chance to see Jackie Chan play against type as a “John Rambo” and “Jason Bourne” kind of man who uses his special forces training to intimidate and find those responsible for killing his child.
