Dictionary.com’s Word of the Year is...

Dictionary.com has announced its Word of the Year, and it's not a new coinage but one that has gained new relevance in the age of Trump: complicit.

Defined by the site as "choosing to be involved in an illegal or questionable act, especially with others; having partnership or involvement in wrongdoing," the word has become attached to US President Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka, who has been accused of, well, being complicit in her father's agenda while presenting herself as a moderating influence and a champion of women's rights.

According to Dictionary.com, searches for the word spiked in March, after Saturday Night Live aired a spoof commercial starring Scarlett Johansson as Ivanka hawking a perfume called, you guessed it, Complicit.

The bit shows Johansson glamorously swanning through a party while a voiceover intones, "A feminist, an advocate, a champion for women. But, like, how? She's loyal. Devoted. But probably should have bounced after the whole 'Access Hollywood' bus thing."

It ends with, "Complicit: The fragrance for the woman who can stop all this ... but won't."

Searches for the word spiked even higher a month later, when the real Ivanka went on CBS News This Morning and was asked about the parody. She replied that she doesn't know "what it means to be complicit."

"If being complicit is wanting to be a force for good and to make a positive impact, then I'm complicit," she said.

People were quick to point out that that, in fact, is not what "complicit" means.

Dictionary.com explained its reason for choosing "complicit" as its Word of the Year.

"This year has seen a real awakening to complicity in various sectors of society, from politics to pop culture," it said.

It added that choosing "complicit" as the word of the year "reminds us that even inaction is a type of action. The silent acceptance of wrongdoing is how we’ve gotten to this point. We must not let this continue to be the norm. If we do, then we are all complicit." — BM, GMA News
