National Artist for Sculpture Napoleon Abueva to be laid to rest Feb. 24

The art world continues to mourn the passing of Napoleon Abueva, considered the Father of Modern Philippine Sculpture.

Friends and family have been paying their respects at the Delaney Hall, UP Parish of the Holy Sacrifice.

Abueva's daughter Amihan informed GMA News Online via a message on Facebook that the funeral will be held on February 24, Saturday, after the necrological service at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Abueva, 88, passed away at 5:30 a.m. on Feb. 16 at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute. The family did not publicly disclose the cause of his death.

For his contributions to the art world and exceptional skill in sculpting, Abueva was conferred the National Artist Award for Visual Arts - Sculpture in 1976. He was 46 at the time, making him the youngest artist to receive the distinction. — Aya Tantiangco/RSJ, GMA News
