Davao is bursting with colors for the 33rd Kadayawan festival
Over 185,000 people are expected to join the Kadayawan Festival in Davao City, now on its 33rd year.
Victoria Tulad reported for GMA News' "Balitanghali" on Saturday that a street dance and cosplay competition kicked off the celebration.
The participants in the Indak-Indak Street Dance Competition performed the history of the different tribes in Davao as well as the values of the Davaoeños onstage. Meanwhile, instead of anime characters, the Cosplay Kadayawan Competition featured eagle-inspired costumes.
Kadayawan is a festival of appreciation and the people fill the city with colors to give praise to the gods for their generosity.
"We always thank God — or as we call it in Lumad, Manama or Allah — for the bountiful harvest. It's a thanksgiving festival and we basically honor the 11 tribes of Davao," festival director Gatchi Gatchalian said.
Tourists were particularly enjoying the festival, as it is something unique to the Philippines.
On Sunday, the Pamulak sa Kadayawan Float Parade and Pitik sa Kadayawan, a drum-beating competition will be held.
Kapuso celebs, led by "Victor Magtanggol" star Alden Richards", will be joining the celebration aboard the GMA float. — AT, GMA News
