Sam Smith had MOA Arena burning in one-night only concert

Fabulous is a word this writer does not throw around lightly, but after watching British singer-songwriter and all-around great guy Sam Smith perform live last night for a one-night-only affair, I say “The Thrill of It All Tour,” brought to us by MMI Live, was nothing short of FAB-U-LOUS.

Although not as packed as expected, MOA Arena shook with the screams of adoring fans when the Grammy-winning artist finally took the stage.

“I’m aware that my music is somewhat depressing,” the singer of ‘Too Good At Goodbyes’ told the audience at the beginning of the show. “But I promise [you’ll] all leave the show feeling good.”

The singer-songwriter sang hits from his latest album — the namesake of his current tour. He opened the show with “One Last Song”, making the crowd sing along with him with ease.

He also sang “Say It First”, “Baby You Make Me Crazy”, “Too Good At Goodbyes”, “Writings on the Wall”, and “Lay Me Down”. Oddly enough, he didn’t sing “The Thrill Of It All”.

In his second Metro Manila show, Smith brought the house down and turned it into “the biggest gay bar in the world” when he sang (and danced to) “Money On My Mind”, proving to his fans once again that he does in fact “do it for the love”.

As a thank you “to everyone who’s been with [him] since the beginning” of his career, Smith sang “Stay With Me” — the third saddest song that somehow makes you feel oh-so-good. The first is “I Can’t Get Started” by Bunny Berigan and the second is Sam Smith’s “Midnight Train”, which he also sang at the show.

When Smith said good night and the stage went dark, the crowd cheered “We want more!” and the singer and his band did not disappoint.

Going back on stage clad with a black trench coat, he sang "Him."

"I wrote this song... because love is love," Smith said, as he opened the encore which included a duet of “Palace” with his back-up singer Lucy. He closed the Manila leg of his tour with “Pray”.

Before his concert, MCA Music awarded Sam Smith with an 8x Platinum Record for his second album, “The Thrill Of It All”. — AT/LA, GMA News
