How Pinoys greeted New Year 2020

Street parties, fireworks display viewings, and concerts are among the many ways Filipinos tried in welcoming New Year 2020, to avoid the traditional firecracker-filled revelry of the past.

In Tondo, Manila, the residents of Barangay 155 Zone 14 greeted the New Year with a costume party, with some dressing up as famous characters in different movies, television shows, and comic books.

According to a report by Bam Alegre on GMA News TV’s Balitanghali on Wednesday, the children in the barangay also enjoyed dancing and joining parlor games during the party.

Barangay Captain Zalvy Bernard earlier informed residents of prohibited firecrackers, and advised households to stock on water to make them ready in case of fire.

When the clock struck 12 midnight, residents greeted 2020 with fireworks and sparklers.

In Manila's Luneta Park, locals and tourists marked the beginning of 2020 with free concert and fireworks display, Balitanghali reported.

According to a separate report by James Agustin, New Year in Baguio City was celebrated with a program at Melvin Jones Grandstand, where dancers and bands performed.

Spectators enjoyed a seven-minute fireworks display at the grandstand, while private establishments also held fireworks shows.

Ivan Mayrina's report on the other hand, showed New Year's Eve reunions of some General Santos City residents with their families.

City folk used used noisemakers, including  kitchen utensils, and motorbikes to welcome Year 2020.

In Iloilo, most of the people celebrated the occasion with dancing in street parties, instead of using fireworks and pyrotechnics, according to a report of John Sala of GMA's RTV One Western Visayas on GMA News’ Unang Balita.

Parties also filled the streets of Cebu City.

A report by Nikko Sereno of GMA's RTV Balitang Bisdak, Barangay Padilla residents waited for the fireworks displays in their community.

Instead wasting money on firecrackers residents chose to welcome the New Year with other forms of having fun in welcoming Year 2020 and the new decade.

Before midnight, some residents attended a Mass at the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral in Cebu City for thanksgiving.

Meanwhile in Pangasinan, some locals welcome the new year with street dancing.  —Joviland Rita/LBG, GMA News
