Cardinal Tagle on Holy Week amid COVID-19: ‘We are not alone’

As the threat of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) hampered traditional Holy Week celebrations in the Philippines, Former Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle reminds the faithful not to feel “alone” during this trying time.

Tagle, who is now the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples in Vatican, shared an inspirational message for Filipinos commemorating Easter and the Holy Week all the way from the Ponrificio Collegio Filippino in Rome, Italy.

After noting how Holy Week was very important for Filipinos, and how this year, a lot of us are unable to be with their families, Cardinal Tagle asked the question that may have crossed our minds as the world faces the COVID-19 pandemic: “Ano kaya ang mensahe ng coronavirus pandemic sa atin, sa paggunita natin sa pagkamatay at muling pagkabuhay ni Jesus?”

Tagle pointed out that Jesus had gone through what many of us are going through through this crisis: lonely, weak, fragile and vulnerable.

“Pinagdaanan niya ang pag-iisa. Pinagdaanan niya ang tinatawag nating kahinaan, fragility at vulnerability, parang ang dali siyang atakihin. Dinanas niya yan, pero ‘yun ay umuwi kay Jesus sa pag-asa sa Diyos. Inahabilin niya ang kanyang sarili sa Diyos, sa ama na nagsugo sa kanya.

“Samahan natin si Jesus nitong ‘Holy Week of coronavirus.’ Ang buong mundo, vulnerable, ang buong mundo, nanghihina, ang buong mundo, parang nagi-isa, pero hindi nagi-isa. Si Jesus inihabilin ang kanyang sarili sa kamay ng kanyang Ama.”

Tagle then recalled how Jesus inspired others to pray for one another and have faith in God, even through his hardships and crucifixion.

“Si Jesus, iniwanan ng mga kaibigan. Baghamat siya ay nilait-lait, baghamat siya ay hinubaran, hindi niya kinalimuatn ang kapwa. Ipinalangin niya sa ama, 'patawarin ang mga umusi sa kanya.' Ipinangako pa niya sa isang salaring nakapako din ang paraiso... inihabilin din kay Maria, kahit na sa pag-iisa at sa hirap, hindi naging makasarili si Jesus. Kaisa niya ang kapwa,” Tagle said.

“Sa ating pag-iisa dahil sa coronavirus, tinuturo ni Jesus hindi ka nag-iisa. Makipagisa ka sa Ama na laging kapiling natin, at makipag-isa ka lagi sa kapwa, na sa oras na ito, ay kasama natin sa pagdurusa at pangamba,” he added.

Finally, Tagle expressed his gratitude to all the frontliners and urged the faithful to continue praying for their countrymen who have made great sacrifices in the fight against the coronavirus.

“Nagpapasalamat po tayo sa napakarami nating kababayan sa ibat ibang bahagi ng mundo na nagtutulungan, nagbabahaginan, nagtatawagan, nagpapalakas ng loob ng bawat isa, at para sa kapwang mga Pilipino na humaharap sa mga pasyente dahil nagtatrabaho kayo sa ospital para sa kapwa-Pilipino na nag-aalaga sa mga may edad, sa mga pamilya, dahil yon ang inyong trabaho, ay kayo rin ay parang nae-expose sa ganitong crisis subalit tinutuloy ninyo para sa mga kababayan natin na tinatawagan ang kanilang mga pamilyang malalayo sa bayan. Salamat,” Tagle said.

“Ito ang ating Semana Santa: Mukhang nag-iisa, pero kapiling ang Diyos at kapiling pa rin ang kapwa, katulad ng pinakita ni Hesus.”

Holy Mass in churches and other public gatherings have been called off as a measure to arrest the spread of COVID-19, which has claimed 182 lives and infected a total of 3,870 people in the country as of Wednesday, April 8, 2020.

At the same time, many Filipinos are enduring hunger and the loss of their livelihoods due to enhanced community quarantine in Luzon and other parts of the country.

Cardinal Tagle had also called on the public not to eliminate "community caring" while practicing social distancing to prevent COVID-19, and underscored that the threat of the disease has been urging the public to show compassion among others. — Margaret Claire Layug/LA, GMA News
