The National Quincentennial Committee (NQC) on Sunday marked the start of the 100-day countdown to the Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines.

The Lapu-Lapu City Government kicked off the countdown by declaring the Liberty Shrine in Mactan as a site of the permanent display of the Philippine flag.

It was followed by a wreath-laying ceremony and the unveiling of the quincentennial emblem at Rizal Park in Manila City.

The year-long event celebrates the Philippines’ role in the first circumnavigation of the world.

Other activities lined up include the launch of a 5,000-peso commemorative banknote and medal on Monday, as well as the reopening of the Metropolitan Theater on April 27.  — DVM, GMA News
