LOS ANGELES — We woke up at the crack of dawn today for the 79th Golden Globe nominations announcement held at the Beverly Hilton's International Ballroom.

Hip-hop icon and rapper Snoop Dog, wearing dark sunglasses and a red beanie, helped Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) President Helen Hoehne announce the nominees this morning.

Leading the motion picture nominations were Kenneth Branagh's "Belfast" and Jane Campion's "The Power of the Dog" with seven nods each. They were followed by Adam McKay's "Don’t Look Up," the Will Smith-starrer "King Richard," Paul Thomas Anderson's "Licorice Pizza," and Steven Spielberg's "West Side Story," with four nominations each.

Following the group were the Nicole Kidman-Javier Bardem starrer "Being the Ricardos," the Timothée Chalamet starrer "Dune," and the animated Disney feature, "Encanto." With two nominations each, the following films were also recognized: the coming-of-age comedy-drama "Coda," the Peter Dinklage-starrer "Cyrano," the Maggie Gyllenhaal's debut directorial feature presentation "The Lost Daughter," Pedro Almodóvar's "Parallel Mothers," and Lin Manuel-Miranda's "tick, tick…BOOM!"

For television, the satirical black comedy-drama "Succession" led with five nominations and then the Jennifer Aniston-led "The Morning Show" and the Jason Sudeikis-starrer "Ted Lasso" with four nominations each. Following them are these TV shows with three nominations each: the Michael Keaton-starrer "Dopesick," the Elle Fanning-Nicholas Hoult led show "The Great," the TV drama "Hacks," Margaret Qualley mini-series "Maid," the Steve Martin mystery comedy "Only Murders in the Building," Ryan Murphy's "Pose," and the South Korean survival drama, "Squid Game."

Getting two nods each were the following shows: the comedy "Black-ish," the action-crime-drama "Lupin," the Kate Winslet-starrer "Mare of Eastown," the Oscar Isaac-Jessica Chastain series, "Scenes from a Marriage," and the Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany-starrer "WandaVision."

Among the movie distributors, Netflix led with 17 nominations followed by MGM/United Artists Releasing with nine, Warner Bros. with eight, Focus Features with seven, and Amazon Studios and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures with six each.

In television, HBO/HBO Max led the troop with 15 nominations, Hulu and Netflix with 10 each, Apple TV+ with eight, FX with five, and ABC and Disney+ with two each.

Meanwhile, Hoehne said the HFPA over the last eight months has completely overhauled its bylaws, implementing sweeping changes from top to bottom that address ethics and code of conduct, diversity, equity and inclusion, governance, membership, and more.

Recently, the HFPA admitted the largest and most diverse class to date of 21 new members, all of whom are first-time Golden Globe voters.

The HFPA will recognize the best in film and television on Sunday, January 9, 2022.
