Sharon Cuneta on Panelo singing her song: Don't mess with a classic

Megastar Sharon Cuneta on Thursday seemed upset after learning that PDP-Laban senatorial candidate Salvador Panelo sang her hit "Sana'y Wala ng Wakas" on the campaign trail.

Cuneta, the wife of vice presidential candidate and Liberal Party member Senator Kiko Pangilinan, on Instagram reacted to a news report which said Panelo sang her song in a sortie.

She indicated Panelo was not allowed to use it.

"Nanang ko po, please lang nakakahiya naman sa amin ni Willy Cruz! You are not allowed to use our song! Don't mess with a classic," Cuneta said in her Instagram account.

The late songwriter Willy Cruz composed the classic.

"I allow its use only for Leni-Kiko! LOL. Utang na loob baka bumangon si Willy, nakakahiya naman sa amin! Kinilabutan ako. In a bad way," she added.

Pangilinan is the running mate of Vice President Leni Robredo.

Panelo is one of the Senate bets PDP-Laban chairman President Rodrigo Duterte had endorsed.

He said he had reached out to Viva Records and was told that he could sing the song.

"Hindi ko naman pinagkakakitahan yung kanta, and I'm not trying to get elected by singing it," Panelo said.

"Sinubukan ko lang pasayahin yung mga tao na naglaan ng oras para sa amin. Akala ko walang masama doon," he added.

"In any case, I've reached out to the copyright owner, Viva Records, and they've confirmed to me that I have permission to sing the song," Panelo said.

Panelo said, "I’m sorry she feels that way."

"It’s one of my favorite songs, and I thought I was honoring the composer Willy Cruz, and Ms. Sharon Cuneta, by singing it," Panelo said. —NB, GMA News
