The Manila Cathedral to play ‘Bayan Ko’ every hour on the 50th anniversary of Martial Law

On the 50th-year anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law in the Philippines, the bells of the Manila Cathedral will play “Bayan Ko,” every hour on September 21, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“Bayan Ko” is one of the Philippines’ most popular protest songs for its patriotic lyrics. It was widely used when former president Ferdinand Marcos Sr. imposed Martial Law in 1972.

As a response to the call of Manila Archbishop, Cardinal Jose F. Advincula, the Cathedral said the project is a way to never forget the lessons learned from the dark days of Martial Law.

According to the Cathedral’s Facebook post, after 7 p.m., the bells will be sounded for 50 times to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives for the Filipinos’ freedom. — LA, GMA News
