'Bagets: The Musical' reveals first cast members

The iconic barkada of the 1980s is making a comeback on stage!

"Bagets: The Musical" has introduced its first two cast members, Tomas Rodriguez and Noel Comia Jr., who will alternate as Gilbert, the geeky yet lovable character originally played by Herbert Bautista in the 1984 film.

Running from January 23 to March 2026 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater, the musical promises a fresh retelling of friendships, mischief, and growing pains while staying true to the youthful spirit that made Bagets a cultural touchstone.

For award-winning theater actor Noel Comia Jr., stepping into Gilbert’s shoes means capturing the mix of awkwardness and sincerity that makes the character endearing.

Comia has built a strong reputation in productions such as "Fun Home" with Lea Salonga, "The Secret Garden," "Pinocchio," and "Buruguduystunstugudunstuy: Ang Parokya ni Edgar Musical" and brings depth and musicality to the role. He sees Gilbert not just as the group’s resident geek but as someone with surprising confidence and charm.

“Gilbert may be shy, but he’s also the kind of friend who can suddenly turn into the life of the party,” Comia shared.

For him, the role is both a challenge and a tribute—an opportunity to breathe new energy into a character beloved by generations.

Meanwhile, P-pop idol and actor Tomas Rodriguez brings a different dynamic to Gilbert. Known as a member of the boy group Alamat, Rodriguez first gained attention in Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) 737 before landing several film roles.

Though this is his first foray into theater, Rodriguez sees the project as an exciting way to expand his artistry.

“It’s my first theater stint, so medyo kinakabahan pero excited,” he said. With his natural charm and playful spirit, Rodriguez leans into Gilbert’s mischievous side, the kind of barkada member who, while shy, is always game for a little fun.

His dedication to the role has gone beyond rehearsals—he even jokes about training specifically for a quirky scene in the show. With singing and dance workshops as part of the preparation, Rodriguez is ready to bring a performance that blends fun with heart.

With Comia and Rodriguez portraying different facets of Gilbert, audiences will experience both the awkward sweetness and the mischievous humor that defined the character. Their performances aim to capture the essence of adolescence, shy crushes, barkada antics, and the bittersweet path of growing up.

"Bagets: The Musical" is creatively guided by PETA Plus. At the helm are director Maribel Legarda, playwright J-mee Katanyag, and musical director Vince Lim, ensuring that the production balances nostalgia with a fresh, contemporary staging. Other cast members will be revealed in the coming months, according to the production. — LA, GMA Integrated News
