UP centennial grand show to feature 200 alumni musicians


MANILA, Philippines – A grand musical – 100 Years of World Class Music – will be staged on November 21 at the University of the Philippines in Quezon City as part of the institution's centennial celebration. The show will feature some 200 alumni of the UP College of Music performing their own compositions, along with other Filipino and international masterpieces. Among the performers are Camille Lopez Molina, Nolyn Cabahug, Dondi Ong, Ana Feleo, Aileen Cura, Jeanne Vicars, Emlyn Santos, Joseph Olfindo, Eric Ferrer. Also performing are renowned three renowned musicians – violinist Joseph Esmilla, flutist Tony Maigue, and classical guitarist Lester Demetillo. UP's multi-awarded choral groups will also be featured, among them the Philippine Madrigal Singers, the UP Concert Chorus, the UP Singing Ambassadors, the UP Cherubim and Seraphim, and the UP Manila Chorale. The musical will also honor some of the university’s most distinguished alumni in music – soprano Evelyn Mandac, tenor Noel Espiritu Velasco, the late UP Concert Chorus conductor Prof. Rey T. Paguio, and UP Cherubim and Seraphim founder Flora Zarco Rivera. Coincidentally, the UP College of Music celebrates its 92nd anniversary and the UP centennial this year. The college also has had some of the Philippines' National Artists in its faculty, including composers Antonio Molina, Lucio San Pedro, Jose Maceda, Felipe de Leon, and conductor Andrea O. Veneracion. The musical is presented by the UP Alumni Association and will be directed by Behn Cervantes, founder of the UP Repertory Company. The gala concert will start at 7 p.m. at the UP Theater in Diliman, Quezon City. A matinee performance is also scheduled at 3 p.m. - GMANews.TV
