Hair trends for 2012: short, tied up, teased hair
By BEA CUPIN, GMA News
There’s one thing international hairstylist Barney Martin doesn’t understand about Filipinas.
“I’ve seen that most women seem to have long hair. I see a lot of women with beautiful face shapes and maybe it’d be nice to see shorter hair,” the Pantene Ambassador told reporters at the Pantene “World-Class Hair Event” on Thursday at the Loft Manansala in Rockwell.
During the event, Martin styled four Filipina fashion bloggers using Pantene products—creating both classic and trendy looks from the Spring-Summer 2012 runways.
But the veteran stylist has news that might make Pinays want to reconsider their long, ebony locks. Martin
said that for 2012, short, tied up, and teased hair is the way to go.

1. Ponytails. No, not the kind you used to wear in grade school. Next year’s up-do’s are best when done low and with varying textures, from sleek (think, Megan Fox’s sleek ponytails) to messy (the fresh-from-the-beach-look). Just don’t go for high ponytails—unless you’re an athlete, of course. |
2. Short, structured hair. Hairstylist Barney Martin said precision cuts will be back for 2012. Posh Spice would approve. |
3. Hair from the 80s and 90s. In what may counter the “structured hair” trend, Martin said that big hair will make its presence felt in 2012—something that made the audience last Thursday let out an audible gasp. |
“You could chop a bit off,” Martin even chided event host and Pinay model Sarah Meier last Thursday.
Martin was on a 3-day visit to the Philippines to promote Pantene’s intensive conditioner line, which the company says has 80 percent more conditioning ingredients.
In the short time he was in the country, Martin drew up other observations on how Filipinas style their hair and gave a few tips and tricks to keep locks healthy and frizz-free.
Start with a good base. The four bloggers during the launch—Camille Co, Kryz Uy, Patricia Prieto and Laureen Uy—had one thing in common aside from their huge following on the Internet. “It was definitely easier to style them because they had good hair to begin with,” said Martin.
Proper conditioning and regular trips to the hairdresser ought to keep your tresses in tiptop shape. Martin said it’s best for women to visit the hair salon once every 6 to 8 weeks.
That shine won’t last forever. Unfortunately, Martin cautioned that beautiful hair won’t last forever—most women can expect a change in hair texture once they hit their 30s. Even childbirth can make hair finer, and a little less full.
Therefore, Martin said, it’s best for women to experiment with different cuts and colors while they’re still young and while their hair can still take the beating.
Coincidentally, Martin said structured, short hair will be back in 2012. Any takers?
Hairspray is a god-send. During the short demonstration, Martin taught the audience a nifty little trick to tame frizzy hair: spray a bit of hairspray on tissue and smooth that over hair to get rid of unruly strands without ending up with helmet hair.
Hairspray is also Martin’s go-to product for a lot of things—preventing and fixing frizzy hair, adding volume to your roots, keeping sleek hair sleek, and fixing untidy ponytails. Coincidentally, those are the looks Martin said will be in vogue for 2012.
Martin also offered a few alternatives to curly-haired Pinays, just in case the tropical weather is too much. “You can braid your hair to keep from being fluffy,” he said.
A plus to this trick? Keep the braid in for long enough, and you’ll end up with defined and better-looking waves.
Search for ‘the one.’ By “the one,” Martin meant the “perfect” hairstyle for your lifestyle, face shape and style.
“Make sure you’ve got a hairdresser who can give you a hairstyle that’ll work if it’s dry, cold, humid, or even if you blow-dry it straight,” Martin said.
If all else fails, Martin advised women to stay indoors as much as they can—not only can Philippine weather do a good job at whacking up your hair-do, it can also lead to damaged hair in the long run.
What’s the best cut to have? If Martin had his way, a lot of Pinays would be sporting bobs right now. –KG, GMA News
