'Sa Ugoy ng Duyan' composer Lucio San Pedro gets commemorative stamp

The Philippine Postal Corp. is issuing a commemorative stamp marking the centenary of National Artist for Music Lucio San Pedro.

In a news release, PhilPost said the stamp features a close-up photo of Angono-born San Pedro with the title of his song, “Sa Ugoy ng Duyan” and his signature on the background.

"Born on February 11, 1913, San Pedro was given the National Artist for Music recognition in 1991, recognizing his valuable contribution to original Filipino music, with songs that became classics like 'Sa Ugoy ng Duyan' and 'Lahing Kayumanggi,' among others," it said.

PhilPost added San Pedro's body of work "not only reflects his artistry but more importantly, expresses the beauty and essence of Filipino identity and culture."

It said the stamp design has the approval of San Pedro’s family, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and the National Commission for Culture and Arts.

"With this commemorative stamp, we will always be reminded that 100 years ago, a music genius named Lucio San Pedro was born and his name will be forever carved in our country’s history just as memories of him are forever etched in the hearts of his family and friends," it said.

PhilPost said 55,000 stamps will be issued in denominations of P10.

It said it started issuing the stamps Feb. 11, and will continue until Feb. 10, 2014 or while stocks last.
