Chino Moreno, the remarkably soft-spoken vocalist for alternative rock band Deftones, was in high spirits at the press conference held the day before their concert at the World Trade Center in Pasay City Sunday night.
“[In Asia] the crowds are a bit more wild,” he said, when queried about the difference between touring Asian countries and the rest of the world. “Though if you come right down to it, people are pretty much the same everywhere you go in terms of having fun. It’s just special, this experience, I get to travel the world with my boys.”
The band from Sacramento, California are in town touring in support of their latest LP “Koi No Yokan” released under Reprise Records. This is the second time for The Deftones to play the WTC. They were here in 2011, touring in support of their “Diamond Eyes” LP.
One of the biggest acts to come out of the 90s with a sound that fused alternative, metal, and atmospheric stylings using seven- and eight-string guitars, the Deftones were founded in 1988 and propelled to fame by their sophomore release “Around the Fur”– an album that proved both a critical and commercial success, entering the Billboard 200 at number 29, remaining on the charts for 17 weeks, and reaching platinum status shortly after.
The Deftones’ signature sound has since become highly influential for bands of the early 90s and early 2000s, and they have since released six more albums.
Aside from Moreno, the band is composed of Stephen Carpenter (guitars), Frank Delgado (keyboards and turntables), Abe Cunningham (drums and percussion) and Sergio Vega (bass).
