'Trinity War' unleashed between three Justice League factions this July

For this month's DC Comics, expect to see the world’s greatest heroes come to blows in a huge crossover event that will not only determine the fate of those who survive it, but the entire DC Universe we know now at “The New 52.”

Beginning this July, DC Comics will usher in “Trinity War,” their first big crossover event since relaunching their entire line-up of comics in 2011, which takes place after the events of the reality-altering storyline known as “Flashpoint.”

First teased with the release of the publisher’s Free Comic Book Day 2012 sampler issue that was “DC Comics—The New 52 FCBD Special Edition,” the new epic pits three different factions of the Justice League against one another—namely the Justice League, Justice League Of America, and Justice League Dark, in a battle that sees the mysterious “Trinity of Sin” and a mysterious Box in the eye of the storm.

Since the beginning of “The New 52” DC Universe, a lot of changes have occurred in the DC Continuity that can be constituted as an almost total reboot to attract new readers to the comic book world and its superheroes. Obvious examples would be the formation of a new Justice League team and entirely new origin story to boot, as well as the inclusion of former Teen Titans mainstay Cyborg/Victor Stone into the main line-up. Following the release of Justice League #1, the new DC Universe went into effect, with several characters like Superman and Wonder Woman getting updated backgrounds (the aforementioned characters become a power couple later on).

However, certain characters like Batman and Green Lantern have taken a “semi-reboot” approach and retain some of their story elements from the pre-New 52 Universe even as they conform to the new world’s setup. Almost two years since the reboot, "The New 52 Universe" is still evolving (thanks to editorial changes and hot topics happening behind the scenes as well), but there’s a firmly-established line-up of heroes and villains, all of whom will clash before, during, and after the events of “Trinity War."

Beginning with this week’s Prelude issue that is “Trinity Of Sin: Pandora #1,” Trinity War will encompass two months' worth of Justice League-related issues, with Part 1, 2, and 3 taking place during the following July issues: “Justice League #22,” “Justice League of America #6,” and “Justice League Dark #22,” respectively.

August will continue the story with Part 4, 5, and 6 with the release of “Justice League of America #4,, “Justice League Dark #23,” and finally “Justice League #22” wrapping things up. In between and within July, there will be tie-in issues: “Constantine #5” and “Trinity of Sin: Pandora #2,” as well as August’s “Trinity of Sin: The Phantom Stranger #11.” It’s a big-pull list for both months, and DC Comics collectors and readers should be sure to visit their local comic book shop and retailer to reserve/order these issues to complete the story.

Even with “Trinity War” coming to a close in August, things don’t stop there. The ramification will be felt the entire month.

Whatever the outcome of the first big event of the DC New 52 Universe, it will spill over to the next big event happening on September, which is “Villains' Month” and will lead to the new storyline “Forever Evil”—and fans can be reasonably certain of which characters on the spectrum of good and bad will be highlighted.

But that in itself is a seven-issue series and a story for another time. However you look at things, it will be a challenging time for the heroes of the DCU. Anyone looking to see an epic heroes vs. villains smackdown, here it is. — VC, GMA News
