An abundance of love: Valentine happenings around the Metro

Valentine’s Day is almost upon us. And whether you want a romantic experience apart from the sex, texts, and passionate kisses or simply want to have a good time out with friends, here are parties, restaurants, concerts, and other potential gimmicks in and around the Metro that you may want to check out.

Screening of documentary 'Jazz in Love' in UP

On February 14, Baby Ruth Villarama's “Jazz in Love,” which premiered to great acclaim at last year's Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival, will be shown at the University of the Philippines Cine Adarna in Diliman. Screening times are 4 p.m., 5:30 p.m., and 7 p.m. The film follows 22-year-old Davaoeño Ernesto “Jazz” Tigaldao, who must pass a Deutsch-language test so he can marry 56-year-old German Theodor Rutkowski. The docu tells of how they met on Facebook, their 11-month courtship, Jazz’s dreams of donning a gown at their wedding and living in Germany, and Theodor’s trip to Davao to ask the blessings of his unaccepting family.

UP Kontrakultura 3: Born for Love and UP Counting Stars

It may sound like the title of a dating simulation game, but this year’s edition of the UP Fair’s concert in the Sunken Garden on February 14 is no less about the fun or the love. Performers include Yeng Constantino, FREESTYLE BAND, Never the Strangers, Join the QUEST, Sabado Boys, Audiocity, and quite a few more. Tickets are going for P120, available at all SM Ticket outlets. For more details, contact Jan (09179534060) or Karlo (09162493495).

Meanwhile, outdoor Valentine event UP Counting Stars will be occurring at 6 p.m. at the CS Ampitheater. The UP Circle of Entrepreneurs are generously celebrating their 23rd year by giving the attendees short film screeenings, live acoustic performances, games, activities, and more surprises. The first 100 attendees get a free picnic kit, snacks, and souvenirs.

Scrambling for a Valentine's gift? Fear not, there just might be something to suit your loved one's tastes at the Valentine Fair at Eastwood Mall from Feb. 10 to 16—you might even find matching outfits, accessories, or furniture to your liking. There will also be a photobooth from Feb. 14 to 16.

For those who want to get the adrenaline going, Neon Night on Feb. 28 will be a blacklight party featuring the musical stylings of DJ’s Mars Miranda, Deuce Manila, Ron Poe, Nina Saputil and Ace Ramos, with the ultimate Hypeman MC Pao.

The Peninsula Manila

Pinoys consider Paris the most romantic city. In light of that, it seems only fitting that the Peninsula Manila is going for a French theme this year: from French wines and hors d'oeuvres at The Lobby (P1,900 per person), a five-course modern European menu in Old Manila (P4,750), a sumptuous buffet in Escolta (P2,200 per person or P3,100 with a glass of champagne), delightfully Asian cuisine in Spices or the groove of retro dance music in Vinyl Valentines at Salon de Ning, where there shall be a Valentine Single's Night Party that couples can join in. Ladies will receive a long-stemmed rose no matter which place they choose to dine.

For gift ideas, The Peninsula Boutique (7 a.m. to 9 p.m.) has an excellent selection of wines, chocolates and gourmet items. Flowers are also available at The Peninsula Flower Shop (Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.). For inquiries or reservations, call (63-2) 887 2888 or e-mail: diningpmn@peninsula.com.

But it doesn't end there—Valentine's does not have to be limited to romantic love. The Peninsula Academy will mount Spanish-Filipino photographer Francisco “Bobby” Guerrero's photo exhibition titled “To the Philippines, with Love.” These photos will shed light on the Filipino way of culture, lifestyle, cuisine, arts and history, as seen through the eyes of the hotel's pageboys and pagegirls. For inquiries, call (63-2) 887 2888 or e-mail: conciergepmn@peninsula.com.
