JICA launches national essay contest for HS students


The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has announced an essay-writing contest open to public and private high school students nationwide in honor of the the 60th anniversary of Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) office.

JICA is a bilateral aid agency that implements ODA's technical cooperation, grant aid and yen loan programs to developing countries such as the Philippines.

The contest is called “JICA and the Millennial Generation,” and the essays' theme is “Japan’s ODA in the Lives of the Filipinos.” The essays should focus on a JICA project or activity, and how young people can use the project to strengthen Japan-Philippines ties.

“JICA believes that the young generation has a role to play in sustaining the strong cooperation between Japan and the Philippines,” JICA chief representative Noriaki Niwa said in a release provided by the agency. “The contest is an opportunity for us to reflect on how we can move forward our countries’ partnership to mutually benefit all.”

The essay must be written in English and must not be more than 1,500 words. The grand prize winner will receive P15,000. The semifinalists will also receive cash prizes. JICA will also provide airfare and accommodations for winners from high schools outside Metro Manila for the awarding ceremonies.
