With storm surge warnings up in 21 areas in Luzon and Visayas due to Typhoon Glenda, animal welfare organizations issued some reminders to ensure the safety of our loyal animal companions.

In a news release on Tuesday, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Asia said dogs, cats and other pets should not be left behind when evacuating and should also be included in disaster preparation plans.

The animal support organization noted that animals should not be left tied up or in cages during evacuation as they will be unable to flee from rising waters.

PETA added that if you are able to safely evacuate with your pets, make sure to place them in secure cages or keep them leashed to avoid the chance of them running away due to frightening sounds like thunder.

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) also issued an advisory listing the precautions pet owners should take during the typhoon season. Among their tips is: "Have an emergency kit ready, including 3-5 days pet food, pet medicines, pet bowls, towels, drinking water." The group also advised against leaving pets behind, especially caged or tethered.

PAWS also provided a link to a pet safety checklist from the Red Cross. — Andrei Medina/BM, GMA News
