100K students expected at 2nd National Letter Writing Day on Oct. 9
Some 100,000 students are expected to take part in the second National Letter Writing Day on October 9, as part of the Philippines' celebration of World Post Day.
The Philippine Postal Corp. is leading the activity in cooperation with the Department of Education, Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino and SM Supermalls.
"With this year's theme 'Pinasaya,' participating students are expected to write happy thoughts to delight a family member, friend, teacher, or anyone special," PHLPost said.
World Post Day aims to create awareness of the role of the postal sector in everyday life, the United Nations said.
The UN said more than 150 countries celebrate World Post Day in different ways.
"In many countries, philatelic exhibitions are organized and new stamps and date cancellation marks are issued. Other activities include the display of World Post Day posters in post offices and other public places, open days at post offices, mail centers and postal museums, the holding of conferences, seminars and workshops, as well as cultural, sport and other recreational activities. Many postal administrations issue special souvenirs such as T-shirts and badges," it said.
On Oct. 9, PHLPost said the center of the Philippine festivities will be the Samsung Hall of SM Aura in Taguig City. Participants include 800 students from Metro Manila.
Related activities will be held in 34 other participating SM malls and 1,000 selected schools. PHLPost postmasters will facilitate discussions, letter-writing and mailing activities.
Postmaster General Josefina dela Cruz said the activity is part of “PHLPost’s Sulat-Mulat Postal Awareness Campaign.”
It aims to promote the art of letter writing as a means of communication especially in the digital age. It also aims to help students sharpen their composition skills and enjoy sending and receiving snail mail. — Joel Locsin/VC, GMA News
