DepEd hopes the public will donate books to schools for Natl Reading Month

The Department of Education (DepEd) on Monday celebrated the start of National Reading Month, a campaign that hopes to encourage children to read and the public to donate books to schools, at the Pasig Central Elementary School.

"'Yung isinusulong natin sa buwan ng Nobyembre ay 'yung pagmamahal ng bata na magbasa nang kanyang sarili, hindi lamang dahil may assignment," said Education Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro in a report on GMA News TV's News To Go.

Luistro hopes that the scheduled activities, which includes storytelling in public schools, will help develop students' reading and writing skills.

"Ang pagbabasa ay nagbubukas sa mga mundo na hindi natin makikilala. Ito ay magdadala sa atin sa kahit anumang imahinasyon," he said.

At the opening ceremonies, Luistro and other DepEd officials read books to groups of students.

Teachers are also expected to lead storytelling activities for those in evacuation centers and street children.

DepEd also urges the public to donate books to public schools via the share-a-book challenge.

The Department hopes that the message will spread through donors' posting photos of the books they plan to donate to the schools and tagging friends who may want to do the same.

Donations may be dropped off at any public school or at the DepEd Complex along Meralco Avenue in Pasig City.

The National Reading Month is launched in connection with the 10-point education agenda of the Aquino administration: "Every Child a Reader" by Grade 1.

November 27 is also "Araw ng Pagbasa," the birth anniversary of former senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, Jr., who was known for his love for reading. — Trisha Macas/BM, GMA News
