WATCH: Reigning Miss Universe shows trip to Yolanda-hit island

Miss Universe 2013 Gabriela Isler is about to turn over her crown to a new beauty queen in a few days. But before her reign ends, she visited an island in the Philippines—not for a vacation, but to give a hand to super Typhoon Yolanda survivors.

During the preliminary competition of the Miss Universe last Wednesday night (Thursday morning, Philippine time) in Florida, Isler shared her trip to Yolanda-hit Coron, Palawan.

The video starts at 1:13:38.

"Something that is very, very important for us in Miss Universe is that we have the opportunity to give back to our incredible fan base here in the Philippines. The weekend of our telecast is the same time that Typhoon Yolanda hit the Philippines and it was really heartbreaking for all of us so far away," Miss Universe Organization president Paula Shugart said.

During her visit, Isler met with children, helped build a new house together with the survivors and inspected the other relief and rehabilitation programs in the area.

"We also looked around the devastation, the houses that Typhoon Yolanda left and see how these people really need help," she said.

The Venezuelan beauty queen and the Miss Universe organization teamed up with Cordaid (Catholic Organization for Relief and Development Aid) to raise funds to help those affected by the super typhoon. — Trisha Macas/BM, GMA News
