Popemobile to grace Manaoag shrine proclamation Feb. 17

Pope Francis may not have gone to Northern Luzon during his Philippine visit last January, but one of his relics will make an appearance there this coming week.

The Popemobile will make an appearance in Manaoag, Pangasinan in time for the proclamation of Manaoag Church as a minor basilica, GMA Dagupan reported Friday.

"The Popemobile will be coming here by Feb. 17, which is the main event. And it will be exhibit(ed) from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.," Our Lady of Manaoag Shrine rector Fr. Jerry Manlangit said.

Expected to make its appearance at the shrine on Feb. 17 is the modified jeepney used in the Luneta Mass.

Manlangit said that while people can take selfies near the vehicle, they will not be allowed to touch or ride it.

"It is a relic (which) is something sacred, and we ask for those who view it to treat it with respect and dignity," he said.

Also, Manlangit said preparations for the proclamation are in the final stages. "Hopefully by the time we start by Feb. 14, we are ready and we are ready for the influx," he said.

Thousands of devotees are expected to go to Manaoag for the Feb. 17 event. Starting Saturday, Feb. 14, Masses will be held to mark the event. — Joel Locsin/VC, GMA News
