Chinoiserie gets a new look with Patis Tesoro’s latest showcase

“Chinoiserie” – Chinese artistic influences reflecting in European art styles – gets a new look with “Grand Dame of Philippine Fashion” Patis Pamintuan Tesoro's innovations. Tesoro is no European, but has done admirable reinterpretations of Chinoiserie with the added flair of handwoven piña textiles.

The latest incarnation, “La Collection Rouge” for Rustan's, is no different. Held at Sofitel Manila on Feb. 17, the 34-piece Valentine's showcase featured “comfortable yet luxuriously adorned evening dresses, alongside anew line of upcycled wear made of an inimitable mix and match of floral and geometric patterns,” according to the press release.

Each piece contained a wide range of hand-done embellishments, from painting to embroidery to beadwork.

“My purpose is to show what is upcycled and global; to make Filipiniana today wearable and at the same time appeal to all ages,” said Tesoro.

Tesoro's designs have been showcased the world over, though she is best known for made-to-order wedding gowns inspired by Filipiniana and for engineering the revival of the piña textile in fashion.  — Vida Cruz/LBG, GMA News
