Magpakailanman: Lola jokes: Get to know the old lady with a funny bone

Nanay Pina no longer has any relatives at the age of 86. This is why she has chosen to live in Kanlungan ni Maria.

But Nanay Pina is not your ordinary lola living in a care facility. In this age of smartphones and gadgetry, she became the star of a viral video: a lola delivering jokes nonstop with a straight face.

Roz Noriega, who is a regular visitor of the care facility, said she has known Nanay Pina for years.

"She would always be the star of the show. Usually after lunch, the nanays and tatays would gather around the living room and sing for me. Nanay Pina would always sing her trademark rendition of Maalala Mo Kaya and (recite) a long Tagalog poem," she told GMA News Online.

When she visited the care facility last January for her birthday, Nanay Pina already had a new trick.

"But this year she surprised me with a new trick, which were her pick up lines. I was super amazed! I always knew she was sharp kasi nakakatahi pa nga siya ng mga pantali, cellphone case, etc., which she would sell to her caregivers or visitors," Noriega shared.

Her friend Jan Parma decided to take a video of Nanay Pina's jokes and uploaded it online. Since then, the video has been reuploaded in various channels and accounts and shared and watched thousands of times.

The video also became the bridge for Nanay Pina to meet her cousin's children, her closest kin.

Nanay Pina came from a small family. It was just her, her parents, and her brother Junior. Two years before she finished high school in 1949, her only sibling died due to drowning.

Her family lived in a rented home in Baclaran in Parañaque City, supported by her taxi driver father. But after saving some money, her father was able to buy a home in Pasay City. There, Nanay Pina put up a store and a dress shop. But, their home was ravaged by a fire in 1979, and only photos from her childhood were saved. They had no choice but to go back to Baclaran and rent again.

Although she had a lot of suitors, Nanay Pina didn't have time to entertain them. She chose to care for parents, especially her mother, who was sick with cancer. That was until Federico came into her life.

Federico from before was an old neighbor in Baclaran who had already been married and had two children. They were reacquainted after so many years when Nanay Pina and her parents returned to Baclaran after their Pasay house was caught on fire.

Federico was a widower, and Nanay Pina's return prompted him to ask her to settle down with him in 1981. He was 68 then, she was 52.

Not long after she got married, her mother passed away in 1986. A year after, her father died. Five years after, Federico then passed away.

Since then, Nanay Pina has been alone. While working as a cook at a carenderia for seven years, someone suggested that she should enroll in a care facility since she no longer has any close relatives.

Through the Department of Social Welfare and Development, she found Kanlungan ni Maria and decided to stay. She didn't like the place at first, but she eventually learned to love it and shared her enthusiasm in life through her stories and other antics.

It was only a matter of time until the care facility's visitors discovered this quality. — VC, GMA News
