Pasyal Pilipinas: The Pahiyas fest, a Santacruzan procession and a carabao race

A carabao race, a Santacruzan and the Pahiyas festival are just some of the events that went on around the country over the weekend under the hot sun.

The events were included in the "Pasyal Pilipinas" roundup on GMA's "Balita Pilipinas Ngayon" on Monday.

Carabao race

A carabao race was one of the highlights of a barangay fiesta in Ilocos Sur province last weekend.

Five carabaos took part in the race at Barangay Villa Garcia in Sta. Cruz town, GMA Dagupan's Joyce Segui reported.

Tourists enjoyed the sight of the carabaos racing like horses. Some of them had been "veterans" of such a race.

However, two of the carabaos stopped running as the weather got very hot.

Last weekend's race aimed to feature carabaos as playing a key role in farming, and as a pollution-free means of transportation.

Festivals

In Samal, Bataan, residents braved the heat for a Santacruzan procession, with the begowned queens accompanied by dancing youths.

And in Lucban, Quezon, the colorful Pahiyas festival kicked off on May 15, with more than 700 households taking part in the annual tradition of decorating homes and other buildings in kiping, fruit, vegetables and flowers. — Joel Locsin/BM, GMA News
