Apparently, a British Invasion is also happening in the auto industry, with the UK’s world-class universities leading in automotive innovation.
According to the British Embassy in Manila, over €1.7 billion have been invested in 13 research and development centers such as MIRA and Milbrook, which have been working together closely with the automotive industry to commercialize projects such as the development of electric vehicle technologies and Intelligent Mobility solutions.
During the recent GREAT British Auto Show at Capitol Commons in Pasig City, British Ambassador Asif Ahmad said their car companies are known for their high standards of excellence.
He also mentioned that the British are as particular about style as they are about function, saying that cars for them are almost like a “fashion accessory.”
About 40 classic and modern vehicles from British automakers Jaguar, Land Rover, MINI, Morgan, and MG were put on display during the outdoor auto exhibit that was patterned after car shows in the UK.
The cars that drew a lot of attention during the exhibit were the vintage and new Mini Coopers. This brand has a substantial following in the Philippines, with enthusiasts banding together to form the Pinoy Mini club.
Edwin Gallardo, who has been buying and selling vintage Mini Coopers for years, admits it’s not easy driving around in a Mini, especially with the kind of traffic in Metro Manila.
However, once you’ve driven a Mini, you’re hooked, Gallardo said, adding that it’s a fun car to drive. Think Mr. Bean, who popularized the 1976 British Leyland Mini 1000.
Meanwhile, Ahmad said the presence of British car brands in the Philippines “has almost doubled,” and more brands like Aston Martin and Lotus are also expected to set up shop in the country.
Ahmad also clarified the misconception that only British car brands operate in the UK. He explained that it is also home to seven foreign automotive companies including Ford, BMW, Honda, and Nissan.
According to the British Embassy, the UK has nine bus and coach manufacturers and eight premium and sports car manufacturers. In 2013, the UK produced over 1.5 million cars and employed over 135,000 in the automotive industry. — BM, GMA News
