Pia says she couldn’t talk to Miss Colombia after win because of ‘bad timing’

The Philippines' candidate Pia Wurtzbach was not able to talk to Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez right after the stunning reveal that it was Wurtzbach who had won the Miss Universe crown and not Gutierrez.

In the post-event press conference that aired on GMA-7's "24 Oras" on Tuesday, Wurtzbach explained that the other candidates were surrounding Gutierrez when she tried to approach her.

"I tried to approach her on stage but there was crowd of girls with her. She was crying. I tried to approach her but I was thinking this was probably bad timing," she said.

In a video clip shared by Missosology on its Facebook page, Wurtzbach could be seen trying to get nearer to Gutierrez. The other candidates seemed to stop her, then a staff member whisked her away from the scene. The other girls were urging the crowd to chant "Colombia!" at the same time.

Wurtzbach has already apologized to the public for host Steve Harvey's gaffe—specifically to the Latino community and the fans of Miss Colombia.

The 26-year-old Filipina said that although she was elated that she won the pageant, she felt bad for her Gutierrez, whom she described as a friend.

"The two emotions that I'm feeling right now is joy that I won, but also concern for Ariadna. That's why it was a little bit of confusion for me," she said.

Because of Harvey's mix-up, Wurtzbach admitted that she was hesitant to go to the front of the stage even it was announced that she was the winner.

"I didn't know whether to go in front of the stage [or not]. I'm a little bit hesitant as well because I did not want to... I wasn't sure if the announcement was finally right so I was waiting for cues of the floor director," she said.

"I actually asked for a mirror backstage because I wanted to see it for myself. I mean it's a different feeling having the crown on my head and seeing myself in the mirror, wearing it," she also said.
