Steve Harvey issues apology on radio show
Steve Harvey, the host of the Miss Universe pageant, talked about the mistake he committed on his radio show on Monday [Philippine Time].
In a recording of part of his radio show, The Steve Harvey Morning Show, where he was interviewed by co-hosts he said that he reached out to both Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach and Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez.
The two-part segment is also posted on his website, iamsteveharvey.com.
Harvey, during the pageant, first announced Gutierrez as the winner and later corrected himself and declare Wurtzbach as the new Miss Universe.
"I owned up and I said I made a mistake. When I did it, it was horrible, it was horrible for Miss Colombia. And she was the one I haven't talked to," he said.
He said he talked to Wurtzbach, the show's staff, people working back stage, and the director.
"Have I tried (totalk to Gutierrez)? Yes. But I have got not a response," he added.
Harvey dispelled reports that he did not attend rehearsals because he attended the read-through of the entire script, the dressed rehearsal and the full walk through of the show.
He also reacted to reports that the gaffe was a publicity stunt.
"That's stupid," he said, adding that "Why the hell will I do that?"
"You wanna do a publicity stunt, they can do that. I'm already famous."
He recalled that there was confusion backstage when he announced the wrong winner.
"I got this guy in my ear saying, "We gotta do something! We gotta do something!" I walked out there to do something," he said.
"All I could think of, the lady who won, Miss Philippines is the loser when she got all the votes and the points. I'm going out and admit my mistake," he added. — BAP, GMA News
