Pia Wurtzbach says the tears she shed were for the Philippines
Host Steve Harvey may have made the "gaffe heard around the universe," but a more modest video quietly overshadowed the flub he made during the Miss Universe coronation night. For loyal fans, a short video shot backstage captured the reason why Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach was fit to wear the crown.
The viral clip shows Wurtzbach being crowned backstage, out of the audience's and the cameras' view. She buries her face in her hands while she cries.
In a video documenting her transformation into a Modern Filipina by Mega Magazine, she explains why.
"It was something that I kept imagining in my head, over and over and over and over again, for years," she said, "And for some reason I just kept thinking about the Philippines—how much this would mean to them. It means a lot to me, but it means more to them. That's what I was thinking backstage...and that's when I started crying."
Paying it forward, Wurtzbach shared a bit of advice for aspiring beauty queens that she received from 2011 Bb. Pilipinas Universe Shamcey Supsup:
"You have to know when to peak—it's very important. You can't go into the first day of the competition as if you're the winner already," she said. "It's going to be very hard to sustain for 20 days until the pageant night. I'm not going to act like it's the coronation night every day."
Pia said that she knew she had to shine on two important occasions: The preliminary competition and the big night. And she did. — Aya Tantiangco/BM, GMA News
