Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult star in romantic sci-fi ‘Equals’

The future looks clean and perfect in romantic science fiction film "Equals" starring Nicholas Hoult and Kristen Stewart. However, underneath the tailored white suits, a strange epidemic is threatening to distrupt this utopia. 

Hoult plays the role of Silas, who finds himself drawn to Stewart's Nia when he begins to exhibit symptoms of "Switched On Syndrome" or SOS—a disease that reverses the genetic suppression of emotions. 

“We wanted these two characters, once they discover love, for it to feel like it was a curse,” screenwriter Nathan Parker said, “They don’t want it, they want to run away from it, but are drawn back together because they can’t resist it.”

The idea came from director Drake Doremus ("Like Crazy" and "Breathe In"), who worked closely with Parker to flesh out the story. The pair developed a story that examines not just the positive aspects of love, but also the pain and agony that accompanies caring deeply for another person

“Equals” opens May 11 in theatres from Pioneer Films. — AT, GMA News
