LOVE IS LOVE

Lin-Manuel Miranda dedicates Tony acceptance sonnet to wife, victims of Orlando shooting

After winning the Tony Award for the Best Original Score for his musical “Hamilton”, Lin-Manuel Miranda ditched his usual freestyling and opted to go for the more structured sonnet for his acceptance speech.

In a video posted by news site Vox.com, Miranda dedicated a sonnet to his wife Vanessa Nadal and their son.

In the middle of his speech, an emotional Miranda then reminded the importance of love amid a tragedy, referring to the shooting in Orlando, Florida that killed 50 people during a gay pride celebration at a nightclub.

Here is the full transcript of the sonnet:

My wife’s the reason anything gets done
She nudges me towards promise by degrees
She is a perfect symphony of one
Our son is her most beautiful reprise
We chase the melodies that seem to find us
Until they’re finished songs and start to play
When senseless acts of tragedy remind us
That nothing here is promised, not one day
This show is proof that history remembers
We lived through times when hate and fear seemed stronger
We rise and fall and light from dying embers, remembrances that hope and love last longer
And love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love cannot be killed or swept aside
I sing Vanessa’s symphony, Eliza tells her story
Now fill the world with music, love and pride

The Tony Awards dedicated the show to the victims of the shooting in Orlando.

Miranda also won Best Book of a Musical.

“Hamilton”, a hip-hop musical about American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, received a total of 11 Tony Awards including the biggest prize of the night, Best Musical. —ALG, GMA News
