Flowers, yellow ribbons mark Ninoy’s 33rd death anniversary
Yellow ribbons were tied around the plants at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in commemoration of the 33rd death anniversary of the senator after whom it the airport is named.
On August 21, 1983, Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. was shot on the tarmac as he exited the China Airlines flight that had flown him home after years of self-imposed exile. His assassination sparked the people's revolution that eventually toppled dictator Ferdinand Marcos from power.
Members of the August 21 Movement and the Ninoy Aquino Movement laid flowers on the spot where Ninoy fell, keeping the tradition of paying respect to the country's bespectacled hero.
Senator Bam Aquino, former senator Heherson Alvarez, and "crying lady" Rebecca Quijano attended the ceremony held at NAIA. Meanwhile, former president Benigno Simeon Aquino and his sisters visited their parents' graves at the Manila Memorial Park.
