‘Kong: Skull Island’ poster reveals ‘Godzilla’ link

Peter Jackson's 2005 adventure film "King Kong" brought the gargantuan gorilla to great heights and it only gets better as Kong returns to the big screen.

"Kong: Skull Island" is scheduled for release March 2017 and while fans have already seen some nifty reveals about the film, exciting new details recently came to light.

At the New York Comic-Con, several “Kong: Skull Island” posters were given out to attendees. Coming Soon got hold of one of these posters, which is basically a map of Skull Island. Cool, but nothing too extraordinary, right?

Well, it just so happens that if you put the poster under a black light, a number of intriguing details pop out. One of these is the logo of MONARCH, found in poster’s upper left corner.

Those who watched Gareth Edwards’ 2014 movie “Godzilla” will remember that MONARCH is a secret organization of scientists dedicated to studying giant creatures such as Godzilla and the film’s primary antagonists, the MUTOs.

In addition to the logo, there’s a note at the bottom of the poster that seems to describe Godzilla:

“His mouth is fire; his roar the floodwater; his breath is death. Enlil made him guardian of the Cedar Forest, to frighten off the mortal who would venture there. BUT WHO WOULD VENTURE THERE?”

According to movie canon, the note was written by William Randa (John Goodman), a government official overseeing the expedition into Skull Island.

The map also reveals a strange, crocodile/fish-like behemoth.

So what does this mean for “Kong: Skull Island”? Will we actually see Godzilla in the film? And if he does make an appearance, will he confront Kong in a battle for supremacy?

Production company Legendary Pictures has actually expressed great interest in creating a cinematic universe shared by both iconic leviathans. 2014’s “Godzilla” is supposed to be this shared universe’s first film, and “Kong: Skull Island” its second.

Following “Kong: Skull Island,” we’ll get a “Godzilla” sequel in 2019, and “Godzilla vs. Kong” in 2020.

Much like Gareth Edwards’ “Godzilla,” “Kong: Skull Island” is a reboot of the franchise. Set in the 1970s, it follows the exploits of a group of explorers who venture into the jungles of an uncharted island — only to find themselves unwittingly trespassing upon the territory of the savage Kong.
