Maxine’s family on Q&A answer: She delivered what she wanted to say
She may not have won the Miss Universe crown, but Maxine Medina would not change a thing about her pageant experience, said mother Marife and sister Ferica in an interview on “News To Go” on Wednesday.
The Philippines' representative on Monday failed to make it to the top three of the Miss Universe competition after a tense Question and Answer portion.
Her interpreter's translation of the question "What is the most significant change you’ve seen in the world in the last 10 years?" has earned the criticism of some for what many see as the wrong choice of words used, which may have affected the beauty queen's answer.
According to former governor Chavit Singson, one of the main sponsors of the Philippines' hosting of the pageant, the interpreter was chosen by the Miss Universe organization, like everyone else involved in the production.
Despite the issue, Maxine's mother and sister believe that she was able to deliver the message she wanted to say.
“What I know is she was able to deliver what she wanted to say. Maingay kasi sa audience, so hindi ko masyadong narinig 'yung sinabi ng interpreter. But she delivered what she wanted to say,” said Marife.
“Mayroon kasing English words na hindi mo talaga mata-translate ro Filipino. I think, doon din nagka-problem... Kung ano ang sinabi niya, tama. 'Yun ang pagkakaintindi natin sa translator. Siyempre, kung ano ang tanong sa'yo, 'yun ang sasagutin mo,” Ferica added.
In a previous interview, Maxine said that she has no regrets about her performance as she gave it her all—from start to finish.
The Filipina beauty queen said, “Happy na ako at least top six and na-represent ko ang Philippines nang maganda and with my full performance. One hundred and one percent naibigay ko na.”
To her critics, she responded, "It's done, let's all move on."
