RESORTS WORLD MANILA ATTACK

Newport Mall closed for week-long mourning period

Megaworld Lifestyle Malls has announced that Newport Mall at Resorts World Manila will be closed for seven days following the attack at the hotel-casino.

In addition to paying respects to the over 30 who died of suffocation following the shooting incident, Megaworld Lifestyle Malls added that they are working to restore "normalcy" and that they "will renovate our facilities at the soonest possible time, while ensuring everyone's safety."

Gunfire and smoke during the early Friday attack at the Resorts World Manila left people confused and terrified.

The police in the morning sifted through the information and found that a man equipped with heavy firearms entered the premises and fired shots inside the casino before stealing chips worth millions of pesos.

Fleeing hotel security, the man went into a room and reportedly immolated himself and caused a fire inside the building.

Authorities assured the public after an initial investigation that the incident was not a terror attack. They further announced that the security agency manning Resorts World Manila will be investigated for possible lapses in surveillance. —Aya Tantiangco/ALG, GMA News
