Karen Fukuhara, Lindsey McKeon speak on female representation at ToyCon 2017
Standing out from thousands of actors is already a grueling task, but being a woman makes it doubly hard due to the dearth of kick-ass female characters.
Luckily for Karen Fukuhara and Lindsey McKeon, they nabbed prize roles like Katana in the summer blockbuster Suicide Squad and Tessa the reaper in the long-running series Supernatural.
However, both actresses said they still have strong feelings about the lack of strong female roles in Hollywood during their "Girl Power" panel on the second day of ToyCon 2017 at the SMX Convention Center.

"It's sad that we have to focus on ethnicity, and women, and things like this in our world today because for me, that should already be a given. It should be equal-opportunity, may the best man win, or woman. It's crazy to me that we have to make a big push for it, something that's already a given in my mind," McKeon said on Saturday.
"It's so funny because I am surrounded by all of these strong women that do karate and that are successful in the business, whatever that may be. But sometimes that's not portrayed in the media or in the entertainment business. We need to change that! Vote for more ethnicity," Fukuhara added.
Fukuhara also briefly commented on the Twitter hashtag #NationalHeterosexualDay, which controversially trended on the social media site in the past week, by telling a story of a teacher's assistant relayed to her while taking up sociology at UCLA.
"He had to come out as gay to his parents, two lesbian women. Then his sister, who was also adopted — one day, it was a dinner, very serious; tense vibes. And she had to say: 'Guys, I'm so sorry, but I think I'm straight'," Fukuhara recalled.
"It just goes to show that why do we have to put such an emphasis on love and sexuality, and who your gender identity is. I think it's who you are as a person that matters," she said.
Fukuhara and McKeon formally opened ToyCon 2017 with fellow celebrities Kevin McNally, Charlie Bewley, Cas Anvar, Stefan Kapicic, and Greg Cipes in a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The two women will return on Sunday for more panels and meet-and-greets. —ALG, GMA News
