Caroline Van Gils' 38-year search for Pinay mom makes headlines in Belgium

It felt as though the entire nation was cheering for Caroline Van Gils to be reunited with her biological mother.

Born Connie Dechino, Caroline found herself in Bacolod racing against time as the only person who interacted with her as a baby was stricken with Alzheimer's disease.

Luck was on her side though and a happy reunion was born from over three decades unwavering faith that she will find her mother, Lelia Mahayag.

Belgian news outfit Gazet van Antwerpen shared the news across the globe in the article "DNA test proves positive: Caroline after 37 years her biological mother knows."

According to Caroline, KMJS helped make the impossible possible — finding fruit for the decades-long search in less than 10 days.

"For 37 years I had agreed that I never knew who my biological parents were going to be. But thanks to the makers of the TV show, this has changed. They started looking for a needle in a haystack day and night. I have also built up a nice friendship with them. This whole story started as a dream that eventually became reality," she said.

Britt Peters wrote for the Gazet van Antwerpen that, thanks to the help KMJS, a positive familial DNA match between Caroline and Leila was made and the two finally met each other.

"I immediately heard the result: there was a match for 99.9%. I never talk about 100%, I learned. A margin is always taken into account," Caroline said. "After my last meeting I already had that feeling. But that scientific proof has given the definite decisive factor."

Caroline said that Lilia had no idea that she was going to be in the studio and the moment was incredibly emotional for the two of them. In addition to all of this, Caroline was also able to lay flowers on the grave of the woman who brought her to Belgium.
