Miss Universe 1995 Chelsi Smith succumbs to liver cancer at 45


Miss Universe 1995 Chelsi Smith passed away on September 8 following a long bout with liver cancer, entertainment outfit People reported on Tuesday. 

Smith was 45. Her family released a statement after her passing to confirm the report:

We are heartbroken to share the news that Chelsi Smith has passed away following a protracted illness. Chelsi was our loving daughter, niece, and friend. We will miss her infectious laughter, joie de vivre, and free spirit. She left an indelible mark on all those who knew her.

While we mourn the loss of this vivacious and kind-hearted woman, we also celebrate her remarkable life and hope that it serves as an example to young women around the world that their dreams are possible through a loving heart and an enlightened mind.

The report said Smith decided to live in Pennsylvania with her mother when her health deteriorated and she stayed there until her passing.

A memorial service is reportedly set to happen in Houston in the next months.

Miss Universe paid tribute to Smith on their Instagram account, the organization posted a photo of Smith wearing the Miss Universe crown during the time in her spotlight.

In the caption they wrote, "The Miss Universe community sends sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Chelsi Smith, Miss USA & Miss Universe 1995."

 

The former beauty queen advocated for biracial heritage hoping to end racism.
