Throwback to the nicest of the ‘90s
The transition from analog to digital ages may be to blame for many of the '90s kids and adults’ wave of nostalgia. The advances in technology and society have brought on so much change, making the most of us miss the decade—but it won’t hurt to do a throwback on some things that make us miss those simpler days. Let’s take a look back at some of those moments, shall we?
Renting Betamax and VHS tapes for movie night
Movie files, you say? In those days, Betamax and VHS tapes were the only way to have your home movie marathons with the family. Video rental stores were on every block and you always have to remember to be kind and rewind!
'90s entertainment everybody loved
German Moreno’s That’s Entertainment was one of the biggest teen to young adult variety shows everybody was into. Were you a fan of the Monday group? Or Thursday? When they all got together on Saturday Entertainment was what really gets the weekend going though. Growing up with shows like 5 and Up and Batibot also kept kids educated and informed about the world.
Paying P5 and P10 with paper bills
Remember the green five peso and brown ten peso bills? Most kids will remember these bills because they would probably be the allowance you would get from your parents then. Aside from this, the five peso bill was famous because Emilio Aguinaldo’s face would soon don a pair of shades or a mustache in the hands of any kid with a black ballpen. With the very high inflation rates these days, would you believe that the jeepney fare minimum was only P1.50? Imagine where P5 or even P10 pesos could get you!
Fashionable throwbacks making a comeback
The '90s were the time of chokers, plaid flannel, and combat boots. These days these grungy staples are making a comeback! Notice the fast fashion stores carrying the same items and the kids today wearing the same things? If you kept your '90s wardrobe, there is no doubt that you can revive your look and blend right in.
Staying connected with loved ones through a dial-up internet connection
Not many had access to internet connection then and most had to rent hourly access at cafes and shops. Of course, it was slow in loading pages, content, and images, but the wonder of finding information or communicating with a beloved family member miles away with a click was still a wonder to behold. Various chat rooms brought a quick way to share words and music with someone anywhere in the world. Still, talking face to face was the best way to get in touch!
Hearing iconic commercial jingles
“You’ve got to live a little... sit back, relax a little…” Now that’s a jingle no one can forget! Most will still recall Sharon Cuneta playfully singing ‘Glory of Love’ for the Selecta ice cream commercial and dropping the cherry on top of the tower of ice cream scoops on a cone. The '90s commercial shows her enjoying ice cream with a seemingly special someone.
These days ice cream remains to pave the way for Sharon’s bonding time with her loved ones, as seen in her comeback with Selecta ice cream:
The '90s may have passed already, but we still have the same moments to look forward to today: Movie marathon bonding time, teaching the kids the changing value of money, reaching out to each other when you are far away, and having a much needed break with the kids and a favorite treat. These are all still important things we love to share with the family. These are still the things that bring us home.
