The canine heroes of the Sogo building collapse

A hotel building in Manila collapsed this week, and rescuers who searched through the rubble for possible survivors had some invaluable help.

MMDA K-9 Corps, a volunteer-based organization, said a team of rescue dogs were deployed to Malate after a portion of a Hotel Sogo building that was undergoing demolition suddenly came down last Monday, killing and burying at least two people.

On Facebook, the MMDA K9 Corps shared photos of the canine heroes who reported for duty.

These include a beagle named Daisy, a Jack Russel terrier named Thunder, a German shepherd named Major; a Belgian Malinois named Thor; and a Dutch shepherd named Dumbo.

Volunteers from the Muntinlupa City K9 Search and Rescue also sent rescue dogs, including Tyler, Hachi, and Billy.

The photos showed how dogs led the rescuers up the steep pile of rubble where the bodies have been recovered.

The victims of the collapse were identified as Melo Izon and Jerome Fabello.

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno said there will be an investigation on who should be held liable for the collapse.
