These innovative trikes make commuting easier for PWDs

Commuting is an everyday struggle for persons with disabilities (PWD).

That is why a group of them, with the help of non-profit organization Project Smile, conceptualized and created PWD-friendly tricycle prototypes.

These trikes make life a little easier for PWDs, seeing as majority of the country's transportation are better suited for able bodied people.

A report in GMA Public Affairs' "Stand For Truth" provides a closer look at these tricycles and the people behind the idea.

According to the report, these tricycles cost P165,000 each. The price is inclusive of the motorcycle, sidecar, an labor fee, among others.

The PWDs who drive them are also given a chance to earn as much as able-bodied tricycle drivers.

Joel Estable, a PWD tricycle driver, said he earns about P1,500 a day.

The problem, however, is that they are not legally recognized as a transport service yet.

"Sa kalsada, sisitahin kami ng mga pulis. Akala kasi nila able-bodied 'yung nag-drive. Eh wala pong prangkisa itong aming motor," Joel said.

For now, they are lobbying to receive a franchise from government transport agencies.
