Philippine eagle undergoes training to be an airline ambassador
Mindanao, a 19-year-old Philippine eagle, is undergoing training to become Cebu Pacific’s conservation education ambassador.
According to a press statement, Mindanao is officially retired from breeding and “will pivot to his new role as soon as he is trained to fly on cue.”
According to Cebu Pacific Vice President for Marketing and Customer Experience Candice Iyog, this is part of the company’s way to care for the eagles that are going extinct.
“[This] partnership with the [Philippine Eagle Foundation] signifies our commitment to keep doing our part in taking care of our planer in line with our sustainability journey,” she said.
The airline company has been supporting Mindanao since 2015 and will continue to provide him with food, shelter maintenance, and keeper and veterinary care for another year.
“We are happy to be keepers of our home through our continued adoption of Philippine Eagle Mindanao amidst the pandemic,” she added.
They also had the theme “Helping the Eagles Survive the Pandemic is Helping Ourselves” during Philippine Eagle Week which ran from June 4 to June 10.
According to the Peregrine Fund, a non-profit organization that conserves threatened and endangered birds of prey worldwide, Philippine eagles are now “critically endangered.” — Franchesca Viernes/LA, GMA News
