Chained, wounded dog in Mandaluyong City gets rescued, receives treatment

A chained and wounded dog found in Mandaluyong City was rescued by non-profit foundation Strays Worth Saving (SWS) and is now receiving treatment.

As seen in Oscar Oida's "24 Oras" report on Tuesday, the dog suffered from deep wounds due to the chains on its neck, resulting in its flesh getting exposed.

The dog was now named Shackles, which SWS based on the hardships he encountered on the streets.

Thankfully, the person in-charge of him immediately agreed to let the dog go so he could get better care.

"They were willing to give him up 'cause they couldn't care for him anymore. It seems that technically he's not really theirs because they just found him," said SWS director Pam Gueco in a mix of English and Filipino.

Shackles was immediately brought to a veterinary clinic, where he will undergo a series of treatments.

Thankfully, veterinarian Dr. Eugene Gomi-o said Shackles did not suffer from septicemia, which may cause death if the bacteria reaches the dog's blood.

"The wound is very chronic. It's not worth opening, it'll be fresh. We'll just do second intention healing. It will take around one to two weeks before it's completely healed," he said in English and Filipino.

"Ninety to 95%, he'll survive. Now, yes, he's out of danger. He just needs to gain weight," he added.

Shackles is just one of the over 90 dogs in the care of SWS.

Pam urged that people who are interested in becoming fur parents should consider adopting rather than buying pets. She also reminded that pets should be treated like family.

"Think about taking care of animals as a responsibility, like you have a child. When they get sick or their looks falter, it doesn't mean you can abandon them. It's a lifetime commitment. You have to be ready for it," she said.
