Fur babies' hair shouldn't be kept too short during summer, says veterinarian
While it feels refreshing for humans to have their hair cut for summer, it's different for our fur babies.
In Athena Imperial's report on "24 Oras Weekend," Sunday, veterinarian Dr. Cyron Sarmiento said it is not recommended for pets to have their coats or fur shaved.
"'Yung coat or balahibo ng ating mga [alaga] ay nagsisilbing insulator," he said. "Coat nila ay proteksyon against sunlight so 'pag sobrang lamig, it will keep them warm. 'Pag sobrang init, it will keep them cool."
("The coat or fur of our pets serve as an insulator. Their coats are protection against sunlight so if it's super cold, it will keep them warm. If it's super hot, it will keep them cool.")
Sarmiento said that when a pet's hair is shaved, its skin might get too sensitive. This may lead to skin irritation including sunburn or skin cancer due to direct exposure to sunlight.
Pets may also suffer from heat stroke or heat stress since the fur that serves as their insulator is gone.
Instead of shaving, Sarmiento said it would be better to have them groomed for a summer cut or trim. It is also advisable to take them out in the morning or night, with water accessible at any time.
"Kailangan cool and dry 'yung place so as much as possible, open ang aircon, open ang electric fan or at least, open mga bintana para well-ventilated 'yung area," he said.
